Richard. P. Phipps, PhD is an Immunologist and cancer researcher whose studies have focused on how the immune system interacts with tissue structural cells to promote inflammation and abnormal wound healing. Dr. Phipps was the first to describe the use of surface markers to delineate subpopulations of connective tissue fibroblasts in the lung, reproductive tract and the eye. He is also an active cancer researcher studying how small lipid mediators called prostaglandins regulate the survival of malignant B lymphoma cells.
In 2001, Dr. Phipps was appointed director of The University of Rochester Lung Biology and Disease Program, a multidisciplinary basic, translational and clinical program to study the causes and cures for lung diseases including asthma, scarring, infections and cancer.
Dr. Phipps has received numerous awards for his research and teaching including The Arthur Kornberg Research Prize, The Virginia Commonwealth University Faculty Star Award, a Burroughs-Wellcome Faculty Sabbatical Award and University of Rochester awards for mentoring and teaching.
Dr. Phipps has edited several books including one on fibroblast heterogeneity and has contributed to numerous book chapters. He has published more than 140 articles on the areas of immunity, fibroblast biology, inflammation and cancer. Dr. Phipps's research is funded by the NIH, private foundations and corporate sources. He has served on review panels for the NIH, the American Heart Association and the Arthritis Foundation. Dr. Phipps is a frequent speaker at both national and international conferences.
His goal is to foster understanding of the communication networks between human tissue structural cells and the immune system. Dr. Phipps is also keenly interested in finding cures for human lung scarring diseases and for human cancers.
